The mono audition

Same wizard fragment, four monos. The face does five jobs here — ghost numeral, micro-labels, data values, version chip, footer whisper — and the test is whether one face survives all five. Webfont candidates cost ~20KB bundled; the system stack costs nothing and looks different on every OS.

The incumbent. Native everywhere, invisible in the good and bad sense — on a Mac it reads as "developer tool default," which is the claude-y feeling.

Already ours by precedent. Rounder and warmer than the system stack; the numerals are excellent at ghost size. Ligatures irrelevant here (we'd subset them out).

The most "designed" of the four without being loud. Italic-ish tails on a few glyphs give the labels character; tracking at 10px uppercase stays clean. The safe upgrade.

Glorious at ghost size — the 02 has real presence. But the quirks (that 0, the bowl shapes) turn to noise at 10px uppercase tracking, exactly where the design uses mono most. A display mono asked to do label work.

Space Mono only where it excels — the ghost numeral, values, the chip — so its quirks are personality, not noise. League Spartan takes the eyebrows and rail (the title-block voice from the DDD artifacts), and the footer whisper becomes a plain sentence, because it is one. Two bundled faces: Space Mono ~18KB + League Spartan 600 ~14KB.
